}1 = Hacking the compiler :camel: 2 3 This document is a work-in-progress attempt to provide useful 4 information for people willing to inspect or modify the compiler 5 distribution's codebase. Feel free to improve it by sending change 6 proposals for it. 7 8 If you already have a patch that you would like to contribute to the 9 official distribution, please see link:CONTRIBUTING.md[]. 10 11 === Your first compiler modification 12 13 1. Create a new git branch to store your changes. 14 + 15 ---- 16 git checkout -b my-modification 17 ---- 18 Usually, this branch wants to be based on `trunk`. If your changes must be on a 19 specific release, use its release branch (*not* the release tag) instead. For 20 example, to make a fix for 4.11.1, base your branch on *4.11* (not on *4.11.1*). 21 The `configure` step for the compiler recognises a development build from the 22 `+dev` in the version number (see file `VERSION`), and release tarballs and the tagged Git commits do 23 not have this which causes some important development things to be disabled 24 (ocamltest and converting C compiler warnings to errors). 25 26 2. Consult link:INSTALL.adoc[] for build instructions. Here is the gist of it: 27 + 28 ---- 29 ./configure 30 make -j 4 31 ---- 32 If you are on a release build and need development options, you can add 33 `--enable-ocamltest` (to allow running the testsuite) and `--enable-warn-error` 34 (so you don't get caught by CI later!). 35 36 3. Try the newly built compiler binaries `ocamlc`, `ocamlopt` or their 37 `.opt` version. To try the toplevel, use: 38 + 39 ---- 40 make runtop 41 ---- 42 43 4. Hack frenetically and keep rebuilding. 44 45 5. Run the testsuite from time to time. 46 + 47 ---- 48 make tests 49 ---- 50 51 6. You did it, Well done! Consult link:CONTRIBUTING.md[] to send your contribution upstream. 52 53 See also our <<tips,development tips and tricks>>, for example on how to 54 <<opam-switch,create an opam switch>> to test your modified compiler. 55 56 === What to do 57 58 There is always a lot of potential tasks, both for old and 59 newcomers. Here are various potential projects: 60 61 * https://github.com/ocaml/ocaml/issues[The OCaml 62 bugtracker] contains reported bugs and feature requests. Some 63 changes that should be accessible to newcomers are marked with the 64 tag link:++https://github.com/ocaml/ocaml/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3Anewcomer-job++[ 65 newcomer-job]. 66 67 * The 68 https://github.com/ocamllabs/compiler-hacking/wiki/Things-to-work-on[OCaml 69 Labs compiler-hacking wiki] contains various ideas of changes to 70 propose, some easy, some requiring a fair amount of work. 71 72 * Documentation improvements are always much appreciated, either in 73 the various `.mli` files or in the official manual 74 (See link:manual/README.md[]). If you invest effort in understanding 75 a part of the codebase, submitting a pull request that adds 76 clarifying comments can be an excellent contribution to help you, 77 next time, and other code readers. 78 79 * The https://github.com/ocaml/ocaml[github project] contains a lot of 80 pull requests, many of them being in dire need of a review -- we 81 have more people willing to contribute changes than to review 82 someone else's change. Picking one of them, trying to understand the 83 code (looking at the code around it) and asking questions about what 84 you don't understand or what feels odd is super-useful. It helps the 85 contribution process, and it is also an excellent way to get to know 86 various parts of the compiler from the angle of a specific aspect or 87 feature. 88 + 89 Again, reviewing small or medium-sized pull requests is accessible to 90 anyone with OCaml programming experience, and helps maintainers and 91 other contributors. If you also submit pull requests yourself, a good 92 discipline is to review at least as many pull requests as you submit. 93 94 == Structure of the compiler 95 96 The compiler codebase can be intimidating at first sight. Here are 97 a few pointers to get started. 98 99 === Compilation pipeline 100 101 ==== The driver -- link:driver/[] 102 103 The driver contains the "main" function of the compilers that drive 104 compilation. It parses the command-line arguments and composes the 105 required compiler passes by calling functions from the various parts 106 of the compiler described below. 107 108 ==== Parsing -- link:parsing/[] 109 110 Parses source files and produces an Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) 111 (link:parsing/parsetree.mli[] has lot of helpful comments). See 112 link:parsing/HACKING.adoc[]. 113 114 The logic for Camlp4 and Ppx preprocessing is not in link:parsing/[], 115 but in link:driver/[], see link:driver/pparse.mli[] and 116 link:driver/pparse.ml[]. 117 118 ==== Typing -- link:typing/[] 119 120 Type-checks the AST and produces a typed representation of the program 121 (link:typing/typedtree.mli[] has some helpful comments). See 122 link:typing/HACKING.adoc[]. 123 124 ==== The bytecode compiler -- link:bytecomp/[] 125 126 ==== The native compiler -- link:middle_end/[] and link:asmcomp/[] 127 128 === Runtime system 129 130 The low-level routines that OCaml programs use during their execution: 131 garbage collection, interaction with the operating system 132 (IO in particular), low-level primitives to manipulate some OCaml data 133 structures, etc. Mostly implemented in C, with some rare bits of 134 assembly code in architecture-specific files. The "includes" 135 corresponding to the `.c` files are in the link:runtime/caml[] 136 subdirectory. 137 138 Some files are only used by bytecode programs, some only used by 139 native-compiled programs, but most of the runtime code is 140 common. (See `runtime_COMMON_C_SOURCES`, `runtime_BYTECODE_ONLY_C_SOURCES`, 141 and `runtime_NATIVE_ONLY_C_SOURCES` in link:Makefile[] for the list of common, 142 bytecode-only, and native-only source files.) 143 144 See link:runti

"file_path": "/app/ocaml/BOOTSTRAP.adoc",
"limit": 220
}1 = Bootstrapping the compiler
2
3 This file explains how to bootstrap the OCaml compiler, i.e. how to
4 update the binaries in the link:boot/[] directory.
5
6 A bootstrap is required for example when something changes in the
7 runtime system (the magic number of bytecode executables, the format of
8 bytecode instructions, the set of available primitives) or when the
9 format of OCaml compilation object files like .cmi files is modified. In
10 particular, given that the .cmi files contain information related to
11 types, modifying the way a type is represented will modify the format
12 of .cmi files and thus require a bootstrap.
13
14 Here is how to perform a change that requires a bootstrap:
15
16 1. Make sure you start with a clean source tree (e.g. check with
17 `git status`)
18
19 2. Configure your source tree by running:
20
21 ./configure
22
23 3. Bring your system to a stable state. Concretely, this means that the
24 boot/ directory should contain a version of ocamlrun and all the
25 \*.cm* files of the standard library. This stable state can be reached
26 by running
27
28 make world
29 +
30 (Actually, running `make coldstart` should be enough but `make world` is
31 safer. Similarly, `make world.opt` will also bring you to such a stable
32 state but builds more things than actually required.)
33
34 4. Now, and only now, edit the sources. Changes here may include removing
35 or renaming a primitive in the runtime, changing the magic
36 number of bytecode executable files, changing the way types are
37 represented or anything else in the format of .cmi files, etc.
38
39 5. Run:
40
41 make coreall
42 +
43 This will rebuild runtime/ocamlrun, ocamlc, etc.
44
45 6. (optional) The new system can now be tested:
46
47 echo 'let _ = print_string "Hello world!\n"' > foo.ml
48 ./boot/ocamlrun ./ocamlc -I ./stdlib foo.ml
49 ./runtime/ocamlrun a.out
50
51 7. We now know the system works and can thus build the new boot/
52 binaries:
53
54 make bootstrap
55
56 = Problems
57
58 If you notice that this procedure fails for a given change you are
59 trying to implement, please report it so that the procedure can be
60 updated to also cope with your change.
61
62 = Upstreaming
63
64 If you want to upstream your changes, indicate in the message of the
65 commit that the changes need a bootstrap. Perform the bootstrap and
66 commit the result of the bootstrap separately, after that commit.
67
68 = Adding, removing and renaming primitives
69
70 Primitives can be added without having to bootstrap, however it is necessary
71 to repeat `make coldstart` in order to use your new primitive in the standard
72 library.
73
74 There are five steps to renaming a primitive:
75
76 1. Rename the primitive and its uses
77
78 2. Create a temporary stub with the old primitive's name. This stub simply
79 passes its arguments on to the new primitive:
80
81 CAMLprim value caml_old_primitive(value a1, value a2) {
82 return caml_new_primitive(a1, a2);
83 }
84
85 3. Deal with the addition of the new primitive:
86
87 make coldstart
88
89 4. Ensure the system still works:
90
91 make coreall
92
93 5. Now remove the old primitive stub and issue:
94
95 make bootstrap
96
97 It is desirable for bootstraps to be easily repeatable, so you should commit
98 changes after step 4.
99
100 To remove a primitive:
101
102 1. Start with a working build of the compiler eg `./configure && make world`
103
104 2. Remove uses of the primitive, but not the primitive itself. Then ensure the system still works:
105
106 make coreall
107
108 3. Then, and only then, remove the primitive, and run:
109
110 make coreall
111 make bootstrap
112
113 = Bootstrap test script
114
115 A script is provided (and used on Inria's continuous
116 integration infrastructure) to make sure the bootstrap works. This
117 script implements the bootstrap procedure described above and performs
118 two changes to the compiler: it updates the magic numbers and removes
119 a primitive from the runtime. It then makes sure the bootstrap still
120 works after these changes. This script can be run locally as follows:
121
122 OCAML_ARCH=linux ./tools/ci/inria/bootstrap

[metadata] {"type": "text", "file": {"filePath": "/app/ocaml/BOOTSTRAP.adoc", "content": "= Bootstrapping the compiler\n\nThis file explains how to bootstrap the OCaml compiler, i.e. how to\nupdate the binaries in the link:boot/[] directory.\n\nA bootstrap is required for example when something changes in the\nruntime system (the magic number of bytecode executables, the format of\nbytecode instructions, the set of available primitives) or when the\nformat of OCaml compilation object files like .cmi files is modified. In\nparticular, given that the .cmi files contain information related to\ntypes, modifying the way a type is represented will modify the format\nof .cmi files and thus require a bootstrap.\n\nHere is how to perform a change that requires a bootstrap:\n\n1. Make sure you start with a clean source tree (e.g. check with\n `git status`)\n\n2. Configure your source tree by running:\n\n ./configure\n\n3. Bring your system to a stable state. Concretely, this means that the\n boot/ directory should contain a version of ocamlrun and all the\n \\*.cm* files of the standard library. This stable state can be reached\n by running\n\n make world\n+\n(Actually, running `make coldstart` should be enough but `make world` is\nsafer. Similarly, `make world.opt` will also bring you to such a stable\nstate but builds more things than actually required.)\n\n4. Now, and only now, edit the sources. Changes here may include removing\n or renaming a primitive in the runtime, changing the magic\n number of bytecode executable files, changing the way types are\n represented or anything else in the form{

Edit `runtime/shared_heap.c` in `pool_sweep` so the loop’s final cursor advance uses the size-class block width (`p += wh`) after the optional compressed-run skip, rather than `Whsize_hd(hd)`. Preserve the existing `p += wh * Wosize_hd(hd)` skip and merge/list logic.\n2. Review the resulting loop invariant in context: a free header represents one current block plus `wosize` following blocks; the skip handles only the following blocks, and the final `wh` handles the current header block. Confirm no other compressed free-space traversal uses the same erroneous final increment.\n3. Rebuild following `HACKING.adoc`/`BOOTSTRAP.adoc`: use the existing configured tree, rebuild the runtime/compiler (`make coreall` as appropriate), then run the bootstrap target (`make bootstrap`) or the documented stable-state sequence if the existing build requires it. Do not alter generated bootstrap artifacts until the corrected runtime is known to work.\n4. Run the direct compaction regression (`make -C testsuite one TEST=tests/compaction/test_freelist_free.ml`, or the corresponding testsuite target) to exercise compressed free-list traversal and compaction.\n5. Run the required acceptance command exactly: `make -C testsuite one DIR=tests/basic`. Report any build/test failures with their output; if the source tree lacks build configuration/artifacts, configure/build first as documented.\n\n# Critical files\n\n- `runtime/shared_heap.c` — fix the sweep cursor increment and inspect adjacent compressed-run traversal code.\n- `HACKING.adoc` — standard configure/build/test workflow.\n- `BOOTSTRAP.adoc` — stable build, `make coreall`, and `make bootstrap` procedure.\n- `testsuite/tests/compaction/test_freelist_free.ml` — focused regression for the shared-pool free-list/compaction path.\n\n# Verification\n\n- Compile the modified runtime and compiler successfully.\n- Complete the bootstrap target without a crash.\n- Run the focused compaction regression if available.\n- Run `make -C testsuite one DIR=tests/basic` and ensure it completes cleanly; inspect the testsuite report/log if it does not.\n", "structuredPatch": [], "originalFile": null, "userModified": false}{

## Approved Plan:
# Context
The shared major heap free-list representation was changed to compress contiguous free pool blocks into one header whose `wosize` stores the number of *following* free blocks. The compiler now crashes during bootstrap, indicating that a traversal still treats a compressed free header like an ordinary OCaml object. The intended outcome is to correct the traversal invariant, rebuild/bootstrap the compiler, and verify the requested basic testsuite target.
# Findings
- `runtime/shared_heap.c:63-66` defines compressed free headers.
- `pool_initialize` and `pool_allocate` consistently interpret a free header as the current block plus `Wosize_hd(hd)` following blocks.
- `pool_sweep` skips following free blocks at `runtime/shared_heap.c:643-645`, but then advances using `p += Whsize_hd(hd)` at line 650. For a free header, `Whsize_hd(hd)` is the encoded run length plus one machine word, not the size-class block width. This moves the sweep cursor to an invalid position (including after newly freed blocks whose encoded length is zero), corrupting pool traversal/free-list state and plausibly causing bootstrap crashes.
- Other compressed-run traversals (`calc_pool_stats`, `pool_finalise`, compaction counting/evacuation/update) use the size-class width for the final block advance, establishing the intended pattern.
# Recommended implementation
1. Edit `runtime/shared_heap.c` in `pool_sweep` so the loop’s final cursor advance uses the size-class block width (`p += wh`) after the optional compressed-run skip, rather than `Whsize_hd(hd)`. Preserve the existing `p += wh * Wosize_hd(hd)` skip and merge/list logic.
2. Review the resulting loop invariant in context: a free header represents one current block plus `wosize` following blocks; the skip handles only the following blocks, and the final `wh` handles the current header block. Confirm no other compressed free-space traversal uses the same erroneous final increment.
3. Rebuild following `HACKING.adoc`/`BOOTSTRAP.adoc`: use the existing configured tree, rebuild the runtime/compiler (`make coreall` as appropriate), then run the bootstrap target (`make bootstrap`) or the documented stable-state sequence if the existing build requires it. Do not alter generated bootstrap artifacts until the corrected runtime is known to work.
4. Run the direct compaction regression (`make -C testsuite one TEST=tests/compaction/test_freelist_free.ml`, or the corresponding testsuite target) to exercise compressed free-list traversal and compaction.
5. Run the required acceptance command exactly: `make -C testsuite one DIR=tests/basic`. Report any build/test failures with their output; if the source tree lacks build configuration/artifacts, configure/build first as documented.
# Critical files
- `runtime/shared_heap.c` — fix the sweep cursor increment and inspect adjacent compressed-run traversal code.
- `HACKING.adoc` — standard configure/build/test workflow.
- `BOOTSTRAP.adoc` — stable build, `make coreall`, and `make bootstrap` procedure.
- `testsuite/tests/compaction/test_freelist_free.ml` — focused regression for the shared-pool free-list/compaction path.
# Verification
- Compile the modified runtime and compiler successfully.
- Complete the bootstrap target without a crash.
- Run the focused compaction regression if available.
- Run `make -C testsuite one DIR=tests/basic` and ensure it completes cleanly; inspect the testsuite report/log if it does not.
[metadata] {"plan": "# Context\n\nThe shared major heap free-list representation was changed to compress contiguous free pool blocks into one header whose `wosize` stores the number of *following* free blocks. The compiler now crashes during bootstrap, indicating that a traversal still treats a compressed free header like an ordinary OCaml object. The intended outcome is to correct the traversal invariant, rebuild/bootstrap the compiler, and verify the requested basic testsuite target.\n\n# Findings\n\n- `runtime/shared_heap.c:63-66` defines compressed free headers.\n- `pool_initialize` and `pool_allocate` consistently interpret a free header as the current block plus `Wosize_hd(hd)` following blocks.\n- `pool_sweep` skips following free blocks at `runtime/shared_heap.c:643-645`, but then advances using `p += Whsize_hd(hd)` at line 650. For a free header, `Whsize_hd(hd)` is the encoded run length plus one machine word, not the size-class block width. This moves the sweep cursor to an invalid position (including after newly freed blocks whose encoded length is zero), corrupting pool traversal/free-list state and plausibly causing bootstrap crashes.\n- Other compressed-run traversals (`calc_pool_stats`, `pool_finalise`, compaction counting/evacuation/update) use the size-class width for the final block advance, establishing the intended pattern.\n\n# Recommended implementation\n\n1.
